Disregarding the dire situation caused by the landfall in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands of two category 5 hurricanes in a matter of two weeks may be Donald J. Trump’s “Katrina Moment”.

Hacer caso omiso a la grave situación causada por el embate de dos huracanes de categoría 5, que devastaron a Puerto Rico y a las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses en un espacio de dos semanas, puede convertirse en el “Momento Katrina” de Donald J. Trump.

In more disbelief than horror, those of us who live in the United States have seen how the President turned his attention to divisive “Identity politics”, even cursing athletes during a speech in Alabama. Days passed and no communications came from the White House about Puerto Rico. It took them five days to say anything meaningful about the situation. 

Con más incredulidad que horror, quienes vivimos en los Estados Unidos vimos cómo el Presidente hizo comentarios groseros contra atletas durante un discurso en Alabama. Pasaron los días y la Casa Blanca no se expresó sobre Puerto Rico. Le tomó cinco días el hacer expresiones concretas sobre la situación.

The President was occupied criticizing National Football League (NFL) players and teams. You should know that Trump is the former owner of the New Jersey Generals, a team of the United States Football League (USFL). This was a rival organization to the NFL. The acrimony between these institutions was such that the USFL filed an antitrust lawsuit agains the NFL. The USFL claimed that the NFL was a monopoly that controlled access to TV broadcasting rights and stadiums. Although the USFL won the lawsuit, it was only awarded 3 dollars with 76 cents in damages. The USFL closed shortly after the verdict.

Meanwhile, American citizens are suffering in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Refugees from other countries are suffering too. And other islands, such as Barbuda and the Dominican Republic are also recuperating from the storms.

Now, the current administration must focus on reaching out to those in need in the Caribbean. PLEASE, ACT NOW! Otherwise, Hurricanes Irma and María will become Donald J. Trump”s “Katrina moment”.

En el 2005, la administración e George W. Bush pagó un precio muy alto por retrasar la ayuda a víctimas del Huracán Katrina. Hoy, la actual administración debe concentrarse en llegar a la gente que necesita ayuda en el Caribe. LE ROGAMOS QUE ACTUEN AHORA!
